TWILIGHT OF AN ARTIST

This I consider my first graphic novel — 130 pages.  An artist, Leon Bell, was in a group of emerging artists who attained early fame.  Now an aging artist, he is the sole survivor of the group.  Another death precipitates a crisis for Leon and he must confront the end of his art career.  Indie published on Smashwords.  Priced  2.99:  https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/389183

This is my first graphic book.  My mother was a traditional Catholic with strong beliefs about life, death, and the coming afterlife.  In the last few months of her life, she expressed doubts and worries about all this.  This is what I imagine as her final conversation with Death.  Also indie published on Smashwords. This graphic book received the 2012 Sue Alexander Scholarship Award for best unpublished manuscript from the Southern California Society of Children’s Books/Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).  Had initial interest from an agent and editor for publication.  After making suggested changes, their interest evaporated.  Contacted a number of other agents and editors with no results.

Alec and Gabi Clayton (Clayton Works) of Olympia Washington started Mud Flat Press.  Through them SQUAWK! was reformatted for publication.  A print version is now available on CreateSpace E-store and a digital version on Amazon.

New Header

Revised the header for this site.  As I have shifted from the art of painting to the art of story, this header should give a clue to my website.  I’ve also redone headers for my other sites using this general theme of line drawings of characters.

Congruity

The paintings or images I used on my various sites are all over the board.  It helps people who check the different sites to have the same images; then they aren’t wondering if they are on the right road.

FB fan page

Yikes!  I think my next baby step is creating a FB fan page — or rather the “public page” for those who are interested.  Researching the pros & cons of different features.  There seems to be a fine line between keeping an open policy which allows people to comment and get involved as opposed to creating an arena that is a free-for-all.

If worse comes to worse, one can always delete the whole page.

Second Look

Recently reading information about one’s online presence.  This is about the actual “look” of one’s various online sites — FB, Twitter, website — photos, backgrounds, layouts.  While branding sound pretentious, that is what it is.  I looked at my various sites today and see where all can use renewing and updating.  They were created at different times with somewhat different purposes.  As I have grown and changed, these sites need the same to represent what I am now.

Process

Must do something to expand the possibilities of this blog — like make it interesting!  Resolution for the new Year:  Write about the guts of my graphic work.  What is my process?  Where do my ideas originate?  How do I decide the form of the graphic work?  How do I interplay story, dialog, and drawings?

That has to be more interesting to others than problems with the presale settings on Smashwords and lack of response to my emails.

Presale Problems for Book

Smashwords recently instituted a presale method to extend the publication date of a book.  This gives the author time to network and otherwise spread the word to build sales.  All presale info for all books has disappeared since S-W revised the website.  While the presale section remains as an option during publication upload, it is not working.  One must contact “Support” at S-W to have this corrected.  After 2 emails, I’m awaiting a response.

ARTIST has been sampled seven times.  Research into sampling & sales shows 6 to 10 samples to make a sale. (Erotica sampling & sales ratio is much lower.  Surprise!)
